Passing Rules: Safe Passing Techniques on the Road

Imagine you’re driving on a scenic Texas highway. You’re behind a slower vehicle, and the road ahead looks clear. Do you know the safe and legal steps to overtake this car?

Did you know? Approximately 52% of fatal car accidents in Texas happen in rural areas, despite these areas having lower traffic volumes than urban areas. Many of these crashes involve head-on collisions.

Understanding safe passing technique is vital to protecting your safety, maybe even your life!

Understanding Passing Rules

Basic Passing Laws in Texas

In Texas, you can only pass when it’s safe and allowed. Usually, you should pass on the left side of the road, in areas marked for passing. Always use your turn signals to let others know what you’re doing, and watch out for cars coming the other way.

No-Passing Zones

No-passing zones are marked by solid yellow lines on the road. These areas, like curves, hills, and intersections, are considered unsafe for overtaking cars because you can’t see far enough ahead. Always respect these markings to avoid dangerous situations.

Safe Passing Techniques: Special Situations

Multi-Lane Highways

Highways with multiple lanes give you more space to pass, but it’s important to stay in your lane most of the time. Only use the left lane for passing, and then move back to the right lane when you’re done. Remember the speed limit and don’t weave between lanes, which can confuse other drivers.

Passing Pedestrians and Cyclists

When you see someone on a bike or walking on the side of the road, give them plenty of space! In Texas, the law says you have to give bikes at least three feet of space when you pass them. Slow down and be extra careful when going by people who aren’t in cars.

When It Comes to Passing, Remember: Safety First!

Proper passing is all about making smart choices and keeping everyone safe. Remember, it’s okay to be patient—if you’re not sure it’s safe to pass, it’s better to wait. By following these tips and practicing good driving habits, you can make your trip smooth and worry-free for yourself and others.

It’s time to move on from your moving violation.
