New York’s Tough Point System – Mistakes Cost You

In New York, traffic violations stick on your record as points for a minimum of 18 months. Rack up 11+ points, and your license is automatically suspended. Accrue over 10 in under a year – same result.

Insurance companies can also see your DMV record and points from the past 5 years. More points equals higher premiums. Every point costs you money.

But there’s a way to erase points before the damage is done…

Fight Back Against Points with TicketSchool’s Online Course

New York’s Point Reduction Program allows drivers to dismiss up to 4 points by completing an approved defensive driving course. Just one ticket could add 4+ points to your license.

TicketSchool’s online course wipes those points away, stopping suspensions and controlling insurance costs. All in a convenient, 100% online format you can complete in just a few hours.

Finish in just one sitting or take your time – with 180-day access, you complete the course when it fits your schedule. Plus, retake guarantees and exceptional customer service.

Get Your NY PIRP Course Done the Easy Way!

Here are the steps you need to follow to receive the benefits of a NY DMV-approved PIRP course:

If You Receive a Traffic Ticket in New York:

  1. Contact the court handling your traffic ticket to confirm eligibility for a Driver Improvement Course based on your violation type and prior course history.
  2. Enroll in and complete an approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) course before your scheduled hearing date. Use a New York DMV-authorized provider.
  3. Obtain a certificate of completion from the PIRP provider upon finishing the course.
  4. File the original completion certificate with the court that issued your ticket, prior to your hearing date.
  5. Attend your hearing and furnish a copy of the certificate to the judge/prosecutor.
  6. Pay any remaining court fees or fines required after potential ticket reduction or dismissal.
  7. Verify with the court and DMV any adjustments made to your ticket charges and license points after the hearing.
  8. Up to 4 points may be reduced on your license if all requirements are met. The ticket violation may also be reduced or dismissed.
  9. Submit a copy of the completion certificate to your auto insurance company to receive a potential premium discount. Check your license status approximately 10 weeks after completing the course. The DMV will post any reduced points to your driving record.

Please Note: Confirm specific instructions with your court, as guidelines may vary.

If Taking a PIRP Course for Insurance Purposes:

  1. Enroll in and finish a PIRP course through a New York-approved provider. Ensure the provider submits your completion electronically.
  2. Obtain a completion certificate from the provider as proof you satisfied the course requirements.
  3. Present your certificate to your insurance company/agent within 90 days of course completion.
  4. Start receiving your insurance savings after submission of the certificate.

Sometimes those savings can start that same day. Enjoy!

I have a long and checkered history with defensive driving. I took my first "court invited" course at age 15 and realized immediately that there had to be a better way. Since that first experience, I have gone on to teach defensive driving classroom courses and to author four internet courses in 2 states. After nearly 25 years in the industry, I can help you find a course that will be the best fit for you.
